Impact on Education’s grants help BVSD teachers instruct outside the box Colorado Hometown Weekly
“Louisville-based Impact on Education, a nonprofit that awards thousands of dollars in Classroom Innovation Grants to teachers in the Boulder Valley School District, announced this week that 57 recipients will receive grants in December as part of its annual $50,000 grant program.  The grants fund classroom projects that enhance learning through the use of hands-on activities and technology to engage students….”

“Second-grade teacher Breida Geesaman wanted to give her students more opportunities to listen to books being read to improve fluency and comprehension, but she wanted a better alternative to tapes and cassette players.  So Geesaman, who teaches at Boulder’s Whittier Elementary School, queried Apple representatives about the easiest way to produce stories digitally and decided on iPod shuffles. And, thanks to a $1,200 grant from Boulder Valley’s Impact on Education, she now has the money to buy 24 shuffles…”

Speaker Addresses Bullying  Daily Camera
“Bullying expert Barbara Coloroso doesn’t see anti-bullying programs as the answer. Most programs are aimed at helping bullies understand how much they’re hurting their victims — except the bullies already know and don’t care, she said. Instead, raising children to speak out against bullies instead of acting as bystanders will go a long way to defeating what’s become the norm in schools worldwide, she said. “The most important thing is how do we raise kids who will stand up against injustices,” she said.
