GAMES
What do butterflies, bones, bats, Brontosaurus, botanicals and bug fossils have in common?
They are topics being explored by 4th and 5th grade girls in an innovative program designed to encourage interest in science. In partnership with the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, Impact on Education allows girls from high-needs BVSD elementary schools to attend GAMES (Girls At the Museum Exploring Science), an after-school program held at the museum.
Over the course of the program, the girls work with female scientists and “she” becomes the dominant pronoun in the girls’ discussion of scientists. Impact on Education funds the costs of the program and transportation to and from school, snacks, follow-up activities, and tool kits for the girls. The program is geared toward low-income students and students of color who are typically underrepresented in scientific careers and the museum-going public, but is open to any 4th or 5th grade girl in participating elementary schools.
