Impact on Education awarded $8,000 to support Broomfield students this year
LOUISVILLE, Colo. (Feb. 10, 2025) — The Broomfield Community Foundation awarded Impact on Education $8,000 to support local students. These funds will be used to purchase school supplies and expand access to mental health resources, college and career readiness training, and early education, reaching up to 3,795 public school kids across six schools.
The foundation has invested more than $35,000 in Impact on Education over the last 14 years.
“This grant allows us to address inequities in Broomfield and invest in the success of all students, ensuring every child has access to the opportunities they deserve,” says Allison Billings, executive director of Impact on Education.
With these grants, Impact on Education distributed needed school supplies to 541 Broomfield students last year through the Crayons to Calculators initiative. This program helps students experiencing financial hardship come to school prepared. Kids receive age-appropriate academic supplies, headphones, and a new backpack.
Impact on Education also scaled up its investment in students beyond their immediate academic needs. They fund 10 mental health professionals across the Boulder Valley School District, giving thousands of Broomfield kids access to critical mental health resources during the school day. In addition, they expanded their Career Readiness Academy, helping kids, especially those who are first-generation or are from lower-income families, prepare for their futures. Students gain resume writing, interviewing, and career planning skills. The academy is part of the Grad Plus framework, a wider initiative by the Boulder Valley School District to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in higher education and the workforce.
“I loved that Career Readiness Academy started some friendships for a few students I felt needed social connections,” says Jane Schissel, a retired Boulder Valley School District educator. “It provided both a social and educational opportunity that was very well received by the students. I was very impressed with the program.”
Even Broomfield’s youngest students are starting their education on the right foot, thanks, in part, to this award. Last summer, 60 rising kindergarteners from Broomfield participated in Impact on Education’s Kinder Bridge initiative, nearly three times as many as the year before. This four-week program teaches kids who haven’t attended preschool or need additional assistance the social, emotional, and executive functioning skills they need to be ready for their first year of school.
With this year’s award, Impact on Education expects to grow its programs to serve more Boulder Valley School District students, focusing on equity and closing opportunity gaps in education.
