Impact on Education to equip over 5,000 BVSD students with school supplies
Louisville (July 11, 2023) – Impact on Education, the foundation supporting Boulder Valley schools, will provide over 5,000 students across Boulder Valley School District with backpacks and age-appropriate school supplies for the upcoming school year through Crayons to Calculators BVSD.
“For many students, back-to-school shopping is filled with joy and excitement for the coming school year. But many families in our community cannot afford to provide these essential supplies for their children,” says Allison Billings, Executive Director of Impact on Education. “Crayons to Calculators BVSD is one of many ways we provide students access to the resources they need, when they need them.”
Established in 2005, Crayons to Calculators began as a collaborative partnership of Boulder County nonprofits – Impact on Education, Extras for Education and I Have a Dream – working to ensure every student had access to the tools they needed for a strong start to the academic year. Loose school supplies were collected from businesses and individuals across the county and volunteers helped sort and organize the supplies for each school.
In 2008, with the generous support of our title sponsor Western Disposal Services, Impact on Education partnered with the St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation to expand the reach and range of the program. Crayons to Calculators then served students in both the Boulder Valley School District and the St. Vrain Valley School District from 2008-2022.
When Crayons to Calculators first started, collaborating with other non-profits and crossing district lines allowed the foundations to more efficiently support their students. Today the needs of the school districts and communities have evolved in a way that means their foundations can best serve Boulder Valley and St. Vrain students and families by focusing on the districts individually.
The core of Crayons to Calculators remains – increasing equity in local classrooms by providing students with tools they need to succeed.
For the upcoming 2023-24 school year, both districts will still run a Crayons to Calculators school supply distribution, but they will be run independently: Crayons to Calculators BVSD and Crayons to Calculators St. Vrain Valley.
Through the leadership of Impact on Education and dedicated individuals and organizations in our community, Crayons to Calculators has impacted over 130,000 students over the past 18 years. Learn more about the history of Crayons to Calculators.
Students across our community have come to rely on Impact on Education to provide access to the resources and opportunities they need to be successful. The 2023-24 school year will be no exception.
In July Impact on Education will launch a new and improved Community Challenge in support of Crayons to Calculators BVSD. You can help support local students by creating a fundraiser or joining an existing one: https://www.impactoneducation.org/2023-community-challenge/
